The final score will say that the Cuba national baseball team defeated the Colombia national baseball team 7–4. And in short tournaments like the World Baseball Classic, victories are the only currency that truly matters.

But when the game is examined more carefully, something more interesting begins to emerge.

Cuba won early, striking with a very clear offensive blow in the first inning, and then spent the rest of the game managing that advantage. Along the way, however, the team revealed several signals that become especially relevant when thinking about the next opponent: the Puerto Rico national baseball team.
