When we talk about home runs in Cuban baseball, the most recent and probably easiest feat to remember was Alfredo Despaigne's 36 home runs in the 2011-2012 season. Yes, in that 51st National Series, Despaigne set the new national record for a single season in the history of the National Series. But what fans and the national media usually don't remember is that Havana slugger Armando Capiró Laferté was the first great record holder of home runs in National Series.
Capiró was the first hitter to reach 100 home runs in National Series, and his impressive 22-homer season in 1973 marked a milestone. His record of 22 homers remained unbroken for 12 years, until Citricultores slugger Lázaro Junco hit 24 homers in the 1984-1985 season. When the 63rd National Series ended last July, Alfredo Despaigne's standing record of 36 homers in the 2011-2012 season equaled Capiro's 12-year tenure.
