Somehow, what was supposed to happen happened: Juan Soto received a huge offer from a New York team, and signed the largest contract in the history of professional sports.
The mighty New York Yankees were not the team that got the deal. This time, and perhaps predictably, it was the Mets. As you may already know, Soto signed a record-breaking $765 million, 15-year contract, which includes a $75 million signing bonus. The deal includes no deferred money and a buyout option after the fifth season. The Mets can void that option by raising Soto's average salary to $55 million for the next 10 years.
So, after two months of expectations and counteroffers, the dispute between the two teams in the Big Apple defined Soto's fate. Now, we have some inevitable questions: Why was the offer for Soto so high? Is Soto really worth this record contract? This is what I've thought since the moment there were multiple offers that topped $600 million for about 13 years.
